“Visitor at Twilight”
Ahhh, August…late summer…nature’s wind-down time. She puts forth as much life as possible in the final warm moments until it’s time to ease into the season of change. For me, it’s rather bittersweet. The hope and excitement of spring behind, the warmth of longer hours with a sun reluctant to set and a sweet joy that only comes with the sounds of cicadas, the flight of bats clearing the sky of mosquitoes, the bullfrogs croaking and lightning bugs reminding me of simple, childhood evenings.
Oh, and let’s not forget the dragonflies…
This month’s painting was inspired by the dragonflies I’ve watched here in north Georgia through the years. They frequent Lake Trahlyta at Vogel State Park and the creeks running through Smithgall Woods, among many other locations. Adding to the inspiration, are the times spent out in Kansas at my boyfriend’s farm, complete with a flurry of dragonflies all over the land and especially at the lake. This particular scene was early evening as the sun was setting. An ending to a beautiful day, made even more special by this visiting dragonfly. It flew right in front of me and hovered by the cattails for what seemed to be quite a while…at least for a dragonfly. I do believe it was saying hello.
Some view dragonflies as “visitors” of loved ones past, as a sign of personal transformation or of good luck. Others see them as incredibly beautiful little dinosaurs (they are descendants from prehistoric times, after all) and marvel at their flight, structure and hunting abilities. However you view them, it’s hard to deny their unique beauty.
I hope this month’s card reminds you of the beauty of
nature as she prepares for the next season…and that you are not alone as you navigate the seasons of your life.
