“Mountain Mischief”
Life tucked away in the North Georgia Mountains has introduced me to the true criminals of the region-those bold, little vandals who trespass on my property for their own pleasure and convenience. Fortunately for me, these offenders come covered in fur and feathers, and over time, I’ve learned that this place belongs to them are more than it ever will to me.
Among the most charming of these culprits is the chipmunk. Several live in the woods around my home, and throughout the year I witness their antics. Spring is when their mischief begins. While I’m busy planting, they’re busy un-planting. A few years back I optimistically sowed neat rows of sunflower seeds, already imagining their golden blooms. Days later, I returned to check for sprouts-only to find a perfect line of tiny, carefully excavated holes. Every seed gone, eaten or stashed away by my industrious neighbors.
Their mischief doesn’t end with spring. Summer turns them into opportunistic foragers, sampling whatever plants or flowers strike their fancy. By fall, they’re in full preparation mode, gathering acorns for winter. Unfortunately for me, they’ve decided my flowerpots make excellent storage vaults. each morning brings a new set of freshy dug holes, evidence of their tireless work.
Over time, however, I’ve come to appreciate their chaos. None if it is done out of spite-it’s simply survival. And in the end, I’m reminded that this mountain is their home. I’m just lucky enough to share it with them for now.
