This painting is inspired by an encounter I had recently with a beautiful, yet slightly battle-worn doe. I watched her from my front porch as she nibbled leaves from the shrubs. Her incredible hearing allowed my slight shift with my camera to ring through her ears. She abruptly looked over toward the sound, saw me, and nervously stood watching me. She was trying to decide if I was a threat. I barely breathed, willing her to stay. For what seemed like forever (but in reality it was more like a minute), she steadied her gaze right into my eyes…and I did the same. She eventually got bored with me and meandered on, nibbling more leaves on her way into the national forest. I didn’t notice her healed, cut left ear or the scars on her torso until I studied the photos I had taken. It was an honor to be stared down by a weathered, older gal…perhaps she recognized that in me.
