My dog, Nester, provided a service I was unaware of until he passed away last year. For almost 12 years, he would make his lap around the property, marking as he went. After he was satisfied, he joyfully bumbled up the front porch steps and back into the house. As the months went by after his passing, I began to notice more and more signs of wildlife closer to my cabin…wildlife I had never seen in all the years here. One of those critters was a gray fox pair! They stealthily slip closer, usually one at a time. Sometimes they travel together with one just off in the distance, but always as the day is waning to a comfortable darkness…that time where light and day are flirting…just enough light to see, but not enough to make nocturnal animals retreat. One evening, as I sat quietly on my back porch, I was honored with this visitor. I barely heard the tiny ruffle of a leaves as he was carefully sneaking through the woods. I quietly grabbed my camera and hit the “on” button…which he heard! What incredible hearing he has! I started nervously clicking away, hoping for a good capture. He bolted on, in lightening-speed silence…after gifting me with a wonderful photo of the moment he looked up at me.
