What a fortunate encounter I had with this red-headed woodpecker!
I captured several photos as it made its way from the fence post to an island of trees and back. It almost felt as if it was trying to communicate with me, so I patiently observed until finally settled back in the trees.
Unfortunately, the red-headed woodpeckers have been on the decline for decades and are becoming a rare sight in many areas due to loss of habitat and competition from invasive species.
